Department of Zoology

The Department of Environmental Science pioneers the field of undergraduate study of the subject running the first ever UG (Hons.) course in Environmental Science under University of Calcutta.
The departmental laboratory is well equipped having a number of scientific instrument of Environmental monitoring including assessment of water, soil and climatological parameters. Seminar lectures have also been arranged to provide the students with better exposure of the subject.Students have undertaken several activities in the college including campus cleaning, tagging the trees as a part of observing important days like Earth day, World Environmental Day etc. Regular weather monitoring and recording is being done by this department, as a part of research and academic activity.

Research Interests:
Gather a thorough know-how of the modulation of the immune as well as the cell death and cell cycle regulators in slowly developing cancers.
Deciphering the immune status of cancer bearing patients with primary focus on immuno-suppressed state of Brain Tumor Patients.
Analyze the cell survival and cell death signals working in tandem within the tumor cells.

• Floral and Faunal Biodiversity of Gut inhabiting strains and their role in the physiology of Invertebrate Organisms.

• Qualitative and quantitative estimation of soil microorganisms and their role in cellulolytic activities.[I.J. Agric. Chem(1985) 18:221;Curr. Sc. (1985) 54(21): 1908].

• Gut associated bacterial flora of worker cast of termite of semiarid ecosystem was also been observed for cellulose digestion by implying enrichment technique. [Curr. Sc. (1986) 55 (15) : 710].

• Cellulose degraders along with total bacterial population of soil and the same of gut was observed for seasonal variation [ISME-4, Yugoslavia(1988); Arid Soil Res. & Rehab. (1988) 2(2): 75]

• Enzyme assays of bacterial flora and assays of mixed gut, mid gut and hind gut of invertebrate organisms indicated the site of enzymatic reaction as well as physiological properties of the strains [FEMS – Biochem & Genetics of Cellulose degradation, Pasteur Institute, FRANCE (1987)]

• The feeding habit of termite and the association of gut microflora (Staphylococcus sp., Micrococcus spp.) [ISEB-VIII, Nancy, FRANCE (1987)] was determined along with the soil inhabiting stains like Bacillus thermiqlcaliphilus [J. Gea Microbiol.(1993) 38(1): 29; W.J. Microbil & Biotechnol. (1994) 10709 & XIII ISSS Congress (1986), Hamburg, Germany]

Dr. Trijit Nanda
Assistant Professor

Research Interests :

• Subject of specialization Neurobiology

• Research interest is on Ecophysiological work pertaining to histomorphology, histochemistry and Electron microscopy with particular reference to the genesis of cell biology.

• Presently engaged in Neurobiological probe on Lymnaea (Radix) luteola , Gastropod, Mollusc.

• Incidentally the aforesaid Mollusc house cercaria helminth, which subsequently pollutes the pond water. Attempt has been made to eradicate such pollution, neurobiolgically, without disturbing the ecosystem.

• Topic of the PhD work – Temperature induced behavioural changes in the cerebral neurosecretory elements in Lymnaea (Radix) luteola.

• Published research papers in reputed national and international journals.

• Serving as the Principal Investigator of UGC minor project.

• Serving as Associate NCC Officer under 20, Bengal Bn NCC unit, of the college.

• CSIR research fellow from 2001 to 2006.

• Worked on several aspects in the field of Endocrinology, like
i. Effect of administration of the female sex hormone Estradiol- 17β on certain metabolic parameters of silkworm.
ii.Comparison of some endocrine parameters of triploid and
diploid Indian catfish.
iii.Thyroid hormone interaction with adult mammalian brain.

• Ph.D. thesis dealt with chronology and maintenance of the
phenomenon of ‘central thyroid hormone homeostasis in adult
mammalian brain.
