Away from fretful stir of the city, amidst a last green nature there stands a seat of barning Vivekananda College (Thakurpukur, 269 Diamond Harour Rd. Kolkata-63). Department of English is as old as the institution itself. Starting its January as an Inter-Mediate college, the institution as well as the department has been upgraded from time to time. At present our English department offers honours, general pas, compulsory pass and Alternative pass at under graduate level. It is a matter of pleasure that now our department also teaches English at the post-graduate level (Distance Mode ) of Vidyasagar University,Midnapore. Our intake capacity is fifty and suction is made strictly according to merit every year. Rate of success of our students is as high as ninety percent and more. More infrequently some of our students are awarded first class. Department of English organizes seminars and discussions both sponsored by the University Grants Commission and individually. Beside those seminars organized solely by the department from time to time, we had already arranged as many as three state and National Level seminars and to our credit, we have three publications each one edited by the-then head of the department Dr. Pranati Duttagupta. Department of English also arranges Fresher’s welcome, Teacher’s day and annual picnic. Apart from these, our department also organizes such programmes as literary quiz, debate and elocution competition to promote all-round development of our students. Recently two of our boys lifted prizes in extempore speech competition at Jadavpore University. |
